39-year-old Ghanaian Student excels at a Chinese University

A 39-year-old Ghanaian student who graduated from the Communication University of China, Beijing has excelled in his three-year Ph.D. Communication Studies academic journey.

Dr. John Demuyakor graduated with distinction and excellence.

Between 2019/2022 Dr. John Demuyakor worked tirelessly and published over 22 academic research articles in internationally recognized journals. As a young researcher, the quality of his articles is cited by over 500 authors across the globe, which are abstracted and indexed in world-renowned databases such as Web of Science, ResearchGate, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Dr. John Demuyakor is the first international student to achieve such a feat at the University. The World Health Organization(WHO) has also adopted and recommended three of his publications as part of the global literature on the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also attended and presented papers at over 14 international conferences.

Professionally Dr. Demuyakor serves as a reviewer for prestigious journals such as Journal of Television & New Media, Journal of Radio and Audio Media, New Media, and Society, Mankind Quarterly Journal, European Journal of Interactive Multimedia and Education, and International Journal of Information and Education Technology. Dr. Demuyakor is also a member of the Organization of African Academic Doctors (OAAD), and International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR)

Currently, his research focuses on Health Communication; Constructive Journalism Studies; Health Journalism; Digital Media; Digital Governance; Development Communication; Political Communication; Social Media and Higher Education; Social Media, and Youth; Media Literacy; Media Education, and Teaching Communication Skills.

Dr. Demuyakor, popularly known among his peers as “Elton-John”, “DJ Kanzo” or Underground Man” had his secondary education at Sunyani Senior High School and graduated in 2002. He proceeded to the University for Development Studies and graduated in 2007. Due to his passion for teaching, he also earned a Diploma in Education from the University of Education Winneba in 2014 and holds a Master’s degree in Communication Studies specializing in Teaching Communication Skills from the University of Cape Coast in 2018.

Since August 2008, Dr. Demuyakor has worked with numerous Non-Governmental Organizations and state institutions such as Northern Network for Education Development (NNED), Tamale Technical University, National Service Scheme, and Ghana Education Service. While pursuing his Ph.D. he also had the opportunity to work as a Research Associate at the African Media Center Institute of Community with Shared Future at the Communication University of China. Dr. Demuyakor, interest in Media, Communication, and Journalism started far back in 2004, when he had the opportunity to serve as a pioneering host and presenter of the morning show program at the then Radio FIDS at the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies.

Also, Dr. Demuyakor serves as the Chapter President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in Beijing 2021/2022 academic year; 2020/2021-Academic Committee Chairman (NUGS- Beijing); 2020/2021-National Academic Committee Member, (NUGS-China); 2020/2021-Chairman, National Academic Sub-committee for Academic and Carrier Development (NUGS-China).
