38-year-old Mary has been working as a sex worker for the last 15 years, and she tells SVTV Africa’s DJ Nyaami how she got into the business, the risks, and life in the ghetto.
According to Mary Toto, a friend introduced her to prostitution over a decade ago while living in Jamestown. Mary mentioned that she had no support after her parents’ demise but needed to survive. Mary noted that she could not reject her friend’s offer.
The sex worker indicated that besides health risks, some clients do not pay and threaten to kill them after sex.
“Sometimes, the men don’t pay me. They would pull a knife on me. Then I leave because I don’t want to die. I had a client, but when I got there, it wa two guys. They both had sex with me and threw me out without paying.”
Speaking on her charges, Mary noted that she makes GHS25 for a round of sex. However, she spends most of it on weed. She said, “I buy immediately after I finish smoking one. I’ve become addicted. I can’t stop.
I don’t so store rushing (breaking into shops), but when a client does not pay me well, I use my toes to take more from his jeans while having sex with them.”
Mary Toto is a mother of one. Her child lives with her baby daddy in Jamestown. Mary mentioned that she regrets her actions but has no options. Based in Kokomba, Accra, the 38-year-old pleaded for support to move out of Kokomba.
