A video released by some galamsey operators is fast going viral as they are heard telling President Nana Akufo-Addo they are not going to stop doing galamsey.
The video which was recorded at night features four young men using an excavator to dig up and wash the soil in search of gold. They are heard saying “Akufo-Addo do you see? We are working very hard at night and it will soon be morning. We are fetching the load… The work is ongoing. It’s not everywhere in Ghana that you know. So we will continue to work. We can’t stop galamsey. That’s our school. Even if you confiscate our machine, we’ll use our hands”.
They went further to say “everyone gets a job to do. We are able to get GHC500 a day. Which government worker do you pay GHC500 a day?” they quizzed the President.
Some social media users have justified their actions by citing the lack of jobs in the country as an excuse. True as that may be, the fight against the galamsey menace must be a collective effort to achieve the desired outcome.
